One of my regulars didn't have enough cash so I let her go, with treats, and she could pay the following week. She was very appreciative. The customer after her, paid her tab. I was thankful and know 1st customer will be this coming Saturday.

My neighboring vendor had a very similar experience as well with customers who don't know each other paying a bill.

Please seek out the good in people! 🥰
Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-51084533363048415972023-06-29T18:38:00.001-04:002023-06-29T18:38:13.652-04:00Welcome Back!

Almost two years since last post! How to loose a few faithful reader in a flash of no words. So much has changed in those two years, so let me "some up":

Ian has finished his associates degree from NOVA, with all A's. He is finishing up registering for GMU and an education major. He is still following his fun passions by interning the "theater camp" at church, leading worship for the college group, and plays with the church band.

Simon still enjoys working at Giant and practically full time. Free time for him is videography and being a tech guy at church.

Kevin is still working for the Emmes Company, writing his own music, and playing with church band. lol!! Not much has change there.

For me, many changes! Since retiring from homeschooling May of 2021, I first got employed to sell dog treats for Chase Your Tail Bakery (in April actually). I am in my third season and still enjoy the Farmers Market experience. For a weekday job, I began at a preschool. While learning a lot, ultimately it wasn't the best job for me. As of now, I work at an HOA office three days a week and it is becoming more enjoyable the more I learn.

The blog was set up to help me remember joy, passion, growing in things that bring me joy and fill the artistic side of my brain. These can be easily summed up in photography, painting, fixing small things (furniture, sewing, things that are rusting, etc.), reading, baking, canning, and growing flowers, herbs, and veggies.

Given the last bullet statement, will be mulling over how to show case a joy, a book, a project, or something unique. Suggestions welcome.

Last but not least the photo is of some of my favorite flowers taken with my newest camera.

Thank you for taking time to read! Hope you find your own Joy!

Jennifer

Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-65038755643387804702021-07-18T08:41:00.003-04:002021-07-18T10:41:56.273-04:00Anyone Else?
Do you throw away egg shells? Or do you clean them out, dry them, and use them for plants/compost?

Me ~ I am somewhere in between. I tend to use them as a natural fertilizer, pest control, and additive to compost. Sometimes I just rinse them out and gently rub the inside to help get rid of leftover egg, rinse again and let them air dry. Sometimes, they'll get "baked" in a low temp oven, 200 - 225 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes. Either way is important because it will deter animals that like raw eggs and help prevent various things caused by raw eggs. Below are the current round of shells drying off. Ignore the major need of caulking!

Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-29877006641463792672021-07-12T18:03:00.003-04:002021-07-12T19:15:44.571-04:00Peach Sorbet?
Oh my goodness! Made peach sorbet this afternoon. It tastes awesome. Here's the short version of how it was made:

5 cups diced or sliced peaches with skins on

1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

3/4 cup granulated sugar

blended it all together in my ninja blender

then got it going in the Cuisinart ice cream machine

once thick, scooped into a bowl and covered it

let it sit in freezer until it is as hard as you'd like

Here is the link to the recipe I followed, loosely: https://www.aheadofthyme.com/3-ingredient-peach-sorbet/

And here photos of my version.

Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-56195687604289450742021-07-11T13:59:00.008-04:002021-07-11T15:28:17.557-04:00Skipped June Completely!
Yeah, June came and went! There was a summer cold in there that dragged on forever. There was VBS at Burke Community Church. There was a lot of putzy little things getting done. That was June in a nut shell.

July is promising to be more jam packed.

Have decided, that while I look for a full time, paid job, I am deep diving into big jobs around the house and smaller, quicker fun jobs. Last week brought 5 days of purging and reorganizing our file cabinets. By Friday, the file cabinets were a little leaner and better organized. Smaller, fun jobs have been sewing, making jam, making pickles, reading, and I am sure I have missed something. These are usually posted on instagram (@jennifermbrock).

In weekend news, I have been working at a local Farmers Market for just over three months. The perks of this are: the vendor I work for is Chase Your Tail Bakery, so Charlotte has been getting her favorite treats for free, being able to hug a few friends since COVID restrictions have lifted, and reduced prices at some other vendors (our fridge and freezer are getting stock with good produce and dairy).

Peaches are coming into season and now I want to try this sorbet recipe:

https://www.aheadofthyme.com/3-ingredient-peach-sorbet/

There are a few other links to fruit deserts I want to try as well in the above link. One has watermelon and another has strawberries.

For now, that's the most current "joy". Catch ya on another day.

Strawberries from a few weeks ago. Made jam, tons of jam, and froze a lot too!
Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-61982120602309903562021-05-24T09:16:00.000-04:002021-05-24T09:16:09.179-04:00The Monday After
It is a rainy Monday morning, after our last child graduating high school this past Saturday (5/22/2021). Last night was the first night, in a long while I felt like I slept through and woke up feeling well rested. Didn't know it would take graduating all my children before I'd sleep well. That is something to be thankful for.

Today brings changes. The last of cleaning up from Saturday (I vegged pretty much all Sunday), writing out to do lists that are totally different than any other in many years, packaging up the last of our homeschool journey, preparing for the next era in life. Had thought I would be more nostalgic over all of what has happened, but I am more thankful for the journey and that it happened than sad that it has ended. I look forward to how my relationship with each man cub is changing and developing more of a mentor/friend relationship with them.

Here are a few photos from Saturday. We need to recreate some family photos. I'll either drop those in this post later or write again soon.

Keon & Ian

Ditched the cap, gown, and nice shirt quickly!

Reading "Oh The Places You'll Go" that various folks wrote in!

Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-49726294507084092842021-05-17T08:22:00.001-04:002021-05-17T08:27:40.777-04:00Discovering Joy ~ A New Chapter
In just a few days, our youngest will be graduating high school.

It is an end of an era! Fourteen years of teaching and learning along side our boys. Surprisingly, I am cool with this. Have been mentally preparing all school year. The last few months, have been pondering what is next. Though Busy planning and prepping for graduation, have a few ideas. Most involve the arts, getting out there and practicing photography and paint.

Tell be about your passions! Would love to hear about them.

Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-47269827325303751912020-06-11T13:20:00.000-04:002020-06-11T13:20:11.599-04:00What's New Mr. McGoo?Hello there! Here is what it looks like:

seeing my neighbors more frequently. We meet, on our joined driveway, from a safe distance, for an hour every Friday. This week will be #11. We've talked about continuing even when the crisis is over.

Simon has been working at a grocery store for a long while now. It seemed like he was only getting one 4 hour shift a week. When busy with college and other activities, that was ok. He looked for another job, but those were few and far between. With this pandemic, he has been getting a lot more hours. Now we happy he didn't find a new job, he might have been laid off.

With some birthday money, I bought some journalling stencils. Been using them in my store bought planner, to make bullet marks; helpful to me for checking things off or highlighting if I didn't get it done. I have added washi tape, in the back, to designate certain pages as different pages. Added ribbons, just today, to paper clips, to make it easier to find certain pages, other than the tabbed month. Yeah, I am a bit geeked out and getting more organized.

the end of 2019/2020 school year is just days away. Several subjects have been completed already. Managed to finalize those grades, package up the work, and get it into long term storage. Excited by this, because I have been trying to stay on top of the grading all year and it has paid off.

in our neck of the woods, it is starting to warm up. Think I have figured out the strategic placing of fans, so that we can keep the A/C off. Have no firm facts, but seems like a few fans running, certain curtains closed, unnecessary lights off, would be cheaper than running A/C, curtains open and random lights on (a habit I am trying to break). There is a touch of joy in this for me.

last but not least, guys who are content with simple meals and ones they can fix on their own.

I am here though.

Things that have changed:

Oldest is college age and figuring out what the future looks like

Youngest is rapidly wrapping up Junior year of high school

Covid-19 has radically changed how life is accomplished around here

Husband has been working from home since mid-March and we are kinda liking it

I have taken up photographing, with a dslr camera, and dabbling in watercolor

I am figuring out what life will look like after the 2020/2021 school year as that is our last year homeschooling

Here are a few photos, of life around our house, as an update:
Lots of cooking, organizing, and desk work. Here is what I am thankful for:

figuring out how to print double sided to new printer

guys doing yard work

home made meatballs

Know there are more, life has just been a bit busier than usual. May or may not be able to post in the coming few days. May go old school and had write out thankfulness. Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-26158596075883460572017-09-09T22:28:00.000-04:002017-09-09T22:29:30.650-04:00Exhausted! A Good Feeling!!

Yes, it feels good to be exhausted. Proof we got stuff accomplished today. Also proved by getting over 11,000 steps, with out thinking about it and not shopping a lot or being a tourist.

Things I am thankful for today, in random order:

both kids gone for a couple hours tonight

inexpensive mums

beginnings of fall decorating

impulse purchase

TV not on, at all, today

ACTs completed for oldest

A very real struggle between both kinds of moments. Thank goodness for clocks, lists, and calendars. Something might have gotten dropped.

It comes down to this for the day:

happy teenager

call back auditions going well

a husband who likes to cook

being hyper focused, yet flexible

friendships, yes again, it's been that kinda week

understanding that life happens

patience

Beauty! Not the Vogue or GQ Magazine type either. Genuine, from the soul, kind of beauty. The kind that don't fade, but go brighter as time marches on. Beauty in friendship, beauty in nature, beauty in routine. That was the sum of today's experience. Beauty in in all.

cool weather

Randomness of the day: Kid wakes up later than usual, stumbles down stairs, and asks what is the plan for school. Dude, it is a holiday! He perked up and had a renewed sense of energy. Oldest was able to attend a "Seniors Hike"; he was thankful to be able to go! Husband was more than happy to grilled meat, for the second night in a row!

My joy and thankfulness goes more like this:

sunshine again today

bacon, cheeseburger for dinner

walks around the neighborhood

homemade vanilla ice cream

minimal driving

working on "Welcome" sign again

When I dont have a lot of chitter chatter, before my thankful list, I am plugging in the spday of the week. There wasnt anything profound or aha moments today, just life and it was mostly enjoyable.

sushine

grilled steak and potatoes for dinner

errands, which equals hanging out with 2/3's of the guys in our house

getting most of need stuff for co-op (starts this Thursday)

geeting step count in, after about 10 days off

What's good in your corner of the world?Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208991257773203938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6488485217248754108.post-18937569538938797172017-09-01T22:00:00.000-04:002017-09-02T08:56:28.681-04:00Hello September!
Do you decorate for fall? Is September 1 the day you start bring all things Fall out? Or do you wait until September 20?

I haven't fully started decorating for fall. Made a trip to the Dollar Tree the other day, as their artificial flowers and such are fairly descent sized and inexpensive. Swapped out my light blue and lavender hydrangea for a fall orange color. That is as far as I've gotten. More on another day.

The fun and good for the day:

Kevin came home early, to beat Friday of Labor Day Weekend traffic

new fitbit came in the mail

temps hovered around 65 degrees today

bought a Take & Bake for dinner (easy Friday Pizza)

lots of vegging on a dreary day

fall colored hydrangea

All in all, not a bad month; ups and downs; good with the bad. Which brings me to a quick list for the last day.

air conditioning (just warm enough that I appreciate it, in the house and van)

free hair cut

cheesy tomato tortollini

getting caught up on Sky Scarf

catching up with friends

With that, I can say:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Goodbye August
